Big Boss is the central character in the Metal Gear Solid series. He first appears as the leader of FOXHOUND and a mercenary working for Cipher during the events of Metal Gear Solid on Shadow Moses Island in 2005. In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, he is revealed to be a CIA double agent working under Colonel Volgin’s gruff command.
Following Volgin’s death, Big Boss goes into hiding and establishes Outer Heaven as a “soldier’s paradise”, where he can provide soldiers with everything they need so that they can be truly free. However, his dream is ultimately destroyed by Solid Snake.
Afterward, Big Boss falls into a coma for nine years.
In 2014, he awakens and forms the military organization known as Diamond Dogs with Kazuhira Miller at his side. Together, they seek revenge against Skull Face and Cipher for their actions in Afghanistan nine years prior. However, their mission quickly goes awry when Skull Face activates Metal Gear Sahelanthropus and attacks them with it.
After fending off its attack, Big Boss discovers that Sahelanthropus was created by Huey Emmerich as part of a project to create artificial intelligence-controlled nuclear weapons called Peace Walker AIs using The Sorrow’s DNA.
At some point after these events, Big Boss becomes involved in a power struggle within Cipher between Venom Snake (a clone of himself) and Skull Face over control of the AI weapon project called Operation Intrude N313 or “The Third Boy”. This culminates in an all-out war between Diamond Dogs and Cipher which ends with Venom Snake apparently killing Big Boss while evacuating from Mother Base after it was attacked by XOF forces led by Skull Face.
